In this era of accidents, crisis, etc it comes as no surprise that the demand for blood transfusions has skyrocketed.. even faster than the number of people that are willing to donate… Bottomline is, there are a lot of ways that you can help, and one is by donating blood to help curb the deficit in the country.. but before you go, here are 5 Important Things You Should Know Before Donating Blood.

1. Blood Money

Well you may know this, but incase you dont know, the blood you donate for free is sold to hospitals… in fact, it is a multi million naira per year industry.

But While this is true, it shouldn’t prevent you from donating.

2. You can Save a life

It’s a known fact that in every few minutes someone in Nigeria needs blood. But what you may not know is Just one pint of your blood can save up to 3 lives.

3. Your blood is really needed

While the demand for blood is growing in rapidly in Nigeria, national blood supplies are not sufficient to meet existing requirements.

Nigeria is estimated to be over 170 million people, and yet the percentage of people who voluntarily donate blood is not up to 1%.

If only 1% of Nigeria’s population can volunteer to donate blood, we shall not lack blood in Nigeria.

4. Donation Age

To donate, you must be at least 17 years old, and also weigh at least 50 kg.

5. You can donate blood every 56 days

This means that if you start donating blood early in the year -lets say around january- and continue donating every time you become eligible -every 56 days- till the end of the year, you would have donated enough blood to save as much as 20 Nigerian lives…
