Donald Trump will become the 45th president of the United States when he takes office early in the new year.

The 70-year-old billionaire, who made his money in real estate, will take over in the White House in January following his shocking win over Hillary Clinton.

The election of the outspoken businessman and TV personality, who has never held public office, shows the anger and frustration of many Americans who felt left behind by the economy and ignored by the political establishment.

But who is Donald Trump? Find out more about the man who now has access to the US nuclear codes.

Born in 1946, in Queens, New York, Donald Trump, was the fourth of five children of his parents Frederick and Mary.
Said to be an energetic, assertive child, at the age of 13 he was sent to the New York Military Academy, which his parents hoped would instil him with more discipline.

After school and graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968 with a degree in economics, Trump moved into the family business.

How did he make his money?

His father was a successful builder and developer of homes, and Donald encouraged him to expand the business using loans.
In 1971 Donald took over the company, and renamed it the Trump Organisation.

Trump invested in large building projects and sought connections with influential people from his base in Manhattan.

He came to the attention of Americans after the opening of ‘Trump Tower’ in 1982, a 58 storey tower block which attracted big name stores and celebrity residents.

What has he done since then?


Trump continued to expand his property empire in the 1980s but the decline in America’s real estate markets in 1990 hit his business.
He claimed to have a net worth of $1.5 billion, but others said that debts incurred brought this closer to about $500 million.

In 1999, Trump considered running as a presidential candidate for the Reform Party, but after a poor performance during primaries he pulled out.

And a year later The Simpsons portrayed Trump as president, in an episode named Bart to the Future, which explored how the lives of its characters might pan out.

The episode shows Lisa, who becomes president, “inheriting quite a budget crunch from President Trump”.

Simpsons creator Matt Groening previously told The Guardian they used Trump as they thought he was “the most absurd placeholder joke name that we could think of”.

In 2004, Trump began to star in business themed reality show The Apprentice, in which contestants fought to win a position in his company.

The show was a hit and gave him his memorable catchphrase: ‘You’re fired’.

A version of the show starring Lord Alan Sugar then aired in the UK in February 2005.

Trump also made a cameo role in Home Alone 2, not to mention appearances in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Zoolander, and Da Ali G Show and Sex and the City.

How many times has Donald Trump been married?

Trump has been married three times, and is currently wed to Melania Trump, a Slovenian former model.
He married Ivana Zelnickova Winklmayr in 1977, a New York fashion model.

The couple had three children before a well publicised divorce was finalised in 1992.

In 1993 he married actress Marla Maples, who he already had a child with. But Trump filed for divorce which was finalised in 1999.

He married his current wife Melania in 2005, with Hilary Clinton among the high profile guests at the wedding.

How many children has Donald Trump?

Trump has five children and eight grandchildren.

Donald Junior, born in 1977, Ivanka, born in 1981, and Eric, born in 1984, were the product of his first marriage.

Tiffany, born in 1993, is Trump’s child with Marla Maples, and his current wife Melania gave birth to Barron in March 2006.

Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric are all executives in their father’s company.
