South Africa’s Tamaryn Green, 24, has been crowned runner-up at this year’s Miss Universe pageant. She missed out on the top spot to Catriona Gray of the Philippines.
Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green is the first runner-up at the Miss Universe 2018 pageant in Thailand where Miss Universe 2017, South Africa’s Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, crowned her successor Miss Philippines ‘Catriona Gray’ as the new Miss Universe.
Miss Green is a trainee doctor and a survivor of tuberculosis (TB) who addressed the United Nations General Assembly on the topic of TB stigma in September.
Had she won, Miss Green would have become the third champion from South Africa – after Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters (2017) and Margaret Gardner (1978).
Green was born on 19 August 1994 in Worcester, Western Cape. She is of Cape Coloured origin.
Her father works as a curriculum adviser while her mother is a teacher. Green attended New Orleans Secondary School in Paarl. She is a medical student at the University of Cape Town.
She was inspired to go to Medical school after she was diagnosed with Tuberculosis. She was later cured.
Tamaryn’s journey to Miss Universe began when she was crowned Miss South Africa earliers this year.
