Earlier today, Google released the results of its 2019 ‘Year in Search’, providing a unique insight into the year’s major moments and top trends based on searches conducted in Nigeria.

The data showed that there was a keen interest in local celebrities, news, and events, with majority of the top 10 trending search terms being local.

Google’s ‘Year in Search’ results are an annual tradition that reveals the trending searches of the nation.

Search trends information is gleaned from data collated by Google based on what Nigerians have been searching for and asking Google this year. Google processes more than 40 000 search queries every second. This translates to more than a billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide.

This year’s trending searches show Nigerians’ keen interest in the world and people around them. Pop culture, sports and entertainment captured the nation’s attention. The top “what is” questions list reflects this strongly – with majority of the top ten questions related to local happenings.

Listwand reports that the “top questions” list shows Nigerians’ awareness of and curiosity about what is happening in the world around them, from politics to more personal concerns, while the “how to” list shows how much Nigerians love to learn.
