Tony Elumelu, is among four Nigerians named by the Time Magazine International in their 2020 list of 100 most influential people in the world for their relentless efforts and achievement in their respective fields.

The New York City based international news magazine/website honoured the four (4) Nigerians in its 2020 list of 100 most influential people in the world for their relentless efforts and achievement in their respective fields.

The list, now in its 17th year, recognises the activism, innovation, and achievement of the world’s most influential individuals in their respective fields of human endeavour.

1. Tony Elumelu

Tony Onyemaechi Elumelu is a Nigerian economist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He is the chairman of Heirs Holdings, the United Bank for Africa,Transcorp and founder of The Tony Elumelu Foundation.

Mr Elumelu is acknowledged as one of Africa’s leading investors and philanthropists for his achievements in business, industry and development not only in Nigeria in particular, but also in Africa in general.

His family-owned investment company Heirs Holdings, is committed to improving lives and transforming Africa, through long-term investments in strategic sectors of the African economy, including financial services, hospitality, power, energy and healthcare.

He also serves as a member of the Global Advisory Board of the United Nations Sustainable Energy for All Initiative (SE4ALL) and USAID’s Private Capital Group for Africa Partners Forum.

2. Tunji Funsho

Mr Funsho, is a Lagos-based cardiologist and first Rotary member to be bestowed with this honour for the organization’s work to eradicate polio, following his role in ensuring Africa’s certification as wild polio-free in August of 2020.

According to TIME, Funsho could have retired as a cardiologist years ago, but in 2013, he “decided to step up” to lead in efforts to eradicate polio from Nigeria and the African continent”.

In reaction to the honour, Funsho stated, “I’m honoured to be recognized by TIME for my part in ensuring that no child in Africa will ever again be paralyzed by wild polio, a disease that once disabled 75,000 African children every single year.

3. Tomi Adeyemi

Ms Adeyemi, a Harvard University-trained born Nigerian-American novelist and creative writing coach, is best known for her #1 NY Times bestselling book Children of Blood and Bone, the first in the Legacy of Orïsha trilogy published by Henry Holt Books for Young Readers.

The book won the 2018 Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy, the 2019 Waterstones Book Prize, and the 2019 Hugo Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book. In 2019, she was named among Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list.

4.Giannis Sina Ugo Antetokounmpo

Giannis Sina Ugo Antetokounmpo, Among Time Magazine most influential people in the world 2020

Giannis Sina Ugo Antetokounmpo, is a Nigerian-Greek professional basketball player for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Born in Greece to Nigerian parents, Antetokounmpo began playing basketball for the youth teams of Filathlitikos in Athens.

In 2016–17 he led the Bucks in all five major statistical categories and became the first player in NBA history to finish a regular season in the top 20 in all five statistics of total points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks.

He received the Most Improved Player award in 2017. Antetokounmpo has received four All-Star selections, including being selected as an All-Star captain in 2019 and 2020, as he led the Eastern Conference in voting in these two years.

Antetokounmpo is a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player and was named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2020.
