Top 5 Effects Of High Cost Of Marriage In Nigeria

In the days of our Nigerian parents and grandparents, marriage was a simpler, less financially demanding, and cherished milestone. The ceremonies, though modest, were rich in cultural value and built on meaningful traditions.

Today, however, the narrative has drastically shifted. Marriage has become a costly affair, and this expense has had profound social and economic consequences on Nigerians, especially the youth. Below, we delve into the top five effects of the high cost of marriage in Nigeria.

Top 5 Effects Of High Cost Of Marriage In Nigeria

Here Are The Effects Of High Cost Of Marriage In Nigeria

1. High Rate of Pre-Marital Sex

Rather than settling down through marriage, many Nigerian men and women resort to casual relationships, viewing them as a cheaper and less demanding alternative.

With men traditionally bearing the brunt of marriage expenses, including bride price and both traditional and white wedding ceremonies, financial constraints often delay or discourage marriage. This reality contributes to a rise in pre-marital relationships, as many cannot afford the societal expectations tied to tying the knot.

2. Late Marriage

The high cost of marriage has led many young Nigerians to delay this significant life step.

Except for financially secure individuals who may lack interest in marriage or haven’t found the right partner, most youths struggle with the monetary demands of marriage. This delay not only disrupts personal timelines but also leads to societal pressures, especially for women, to marry at a certain age.

3. Marrying The Wrong Person

Financial considerations often force people into unions they might not otherwise choose.

For many women, the financial capability of a suitor can outweigh emotional compatibility. This reality means some individuals marry those who can afford the marriage rites rather than those they genuinely love. Consequently, such unions often lead to dissatisfaction, as emotional bonds may be weaker or non-existent.

4. Poverty

Marriage, when poorly planned financially, can deepen poverty for many families.

For young men, saving diligently for years only to exhaust it all on a one-day event can be financially crippling. Starting life anew after an expensive wedding, coupled with the responsibilities of marriage, becomes a daunting task. This cycle often leads to economic stagnation or regression for many couples.

5. Lots Of Unmarried Aged Women

The high cost of marriage has left many women past marriageable age without suitors.

When marriage becomes an expensive pursuit, many men delay proposing, leaving a growing number of women single as they age. This issue is often a major prayer point for families at seminars and vigils, as societal expectations for women to marry by a certain age remain high.

Unfortunately, the root cause—prohibitive marriage costs—is rarely addressed in such discussions.
