Covenant university is the best university in Nigeria‚ according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019 released on Wednesday.
The rankings are published annually by Times Higher Education‚ a weekly magazine based in London‚ which reports on issues related to higher education. Wednesday’s rankings are the 15th edition published by the magazine.
The first rankings were published in 2004 and only included 200 universities. Wednesday’s analysis ranked more than 1‚200 institutions.
Covenant University was ranked 601 – 800. it is the only private University in Nigeria among the Top 800.
The University of the Ibadan was the second best ranked university in Nigeria‚ falling into categories of universities ranked between 601 to 800.
University of Nigeria was the third best best Nigerian University‚ ranked around 1001+.

Covenant University is a private Pentecostal Christian University, which has been operating with official status since 2002 in Ota, Nigeria.
Covenant University is one of the leading universities in not just Nigeria, but Africa. 2. University of Ibadan

Founded in 1932, the University of Ibadan (UI) was the first university to be established in Nigeria. Originally an affiliated College of the University of London, it was granted full independent status in 1962.
What began life as a small institution with just three departments in Science, Medicine and the Arts, quickly expanded to become one of the country’s most prestigious higher education institutions. Today UI comprises thirteen faculties, including Social Sciences, Agriculture and Forestry, Education, Veterinary Medicine, Technology, Law, Public Health and Dentistry.

UI’s Postgraduate School is the largest in Africa, with its undergraduate and postgraduate student population split 50/50. Around a third of all students live in university provided halls of residence – modern facilities that come equipped with gyms, cafes and common rooms.
The university’s ethos is founded on making education available to all, with a well established Distance Learning Centre where the same courses undertaken by full-time students are open to those whose access to education is restricted by finances or family obligations.
UI also runs a number of public facilities, including a media resource centre that offers educational workshops, reading services and consultancies for schools and children’s libraries.
The university also lays claim to its own zoological and botanical gardens, which house endangered animals and plants, and run conservation programmes dedicated to supporting environmental needs.
Its future infrastructure development plans include a new business school and an Institute for Infectious Diseases.
Among the university’s alumni are many notable individuals who have contributed significantly to the political, industrial, economic and cultural development of Nigeria, including the writer Wole Soyinka, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986, and Chinua Achebe whose novel Things Fall Apart is the most widely read book in contemporary African literature.

3. University of Nigeria Nsukka

The University of Nigeria Nsukka is a federal university in Enugu State, Nigeria. Known as UNN, it was founded by Nnamdi Azikiwe (Governor General of Nigeria from 1960 to 1963 and first President of Nigeria from 1963 to 1966) in 1955 and formally opened in 1960.
UNN operates 102 academic departments across 15 faculties and offers 82 undergraduate programmes and 211 postgraduate programmes for a student population over 36,000. It does so across four campuses: Nsukka; Enugu campus (UNEC); University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), in Ituku-Ozalla and the University of Nigeria Aba campus (UNAC). There is also a UNN Business School.
The Nsukka campus houses the faculties of agriculture, arts, biological sciences, education, engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, and veterinary medicine.
The former Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology (UNEC), Enugu, comprises of the faculties of business administration, environmental studies, law and medical sciences.
The teaching hospital (UNTH) hosts the faculty of dentistry and health sciences and technology. Finally, the Aba campus (UNAC) is the site of the Institute of Nigerian Languages.
Research activity is undertaken across institutes for African studies, education, developmental studies, postgraduate studies and herbal medicine and drugs research and development. There are also centres established to look at climate change, space science and energy research.
UNN also has the Roar Nigeria Hub within its main site. The Hub is a private sector initiative from two of the university’s engineering students. Its aim is to encourage entrepreneurial activity among students and faculty, investing in viable student-led ideas, and to help link academia, the public and industry.
UNN alumni include numerous politicians, such as state governors as well as senators and ministers in the Nigerian and other African governments, academics, business people, artists and actors.
