Manchester City’s defender and captain Vincent Kompany’s father has become the first ever black mayor in Belgium after winning local elections for the municipality of Ganshoren in Brussels.
Pierre Kompany was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but moved to Belgium in 1975 as a refugee.
He joined active politics in 2006, when he was elected a councilor.
In 2014, he won a seat in the Brussels regional parliament.
His sons, Vincent and Francois Kompany are renowned footballers, playing for Manchester City and KSV Roeselare respectively.
Both brothers were quick to congratulate their father on social media for his feat.
“History! We are so proud of you dad,” Vincent wrote on his Instagram.
“He’s the first black mayor in Belgium – it’s never happened before, it’s historic…. congratulations to my dad!” he added.
